A data envelopment analysis of the global microfinance industry

This work compares the technical efficiency of private and publicly listed Micro Finance Institutions (MFIs), to that commercial banks a similar scale geographical location. Two research questions are addressed: MFIs go public more efficient than non-public MFIs?; and, how relative “comparable” banks? Our results indicate when latter operate at suboptimal scale. That is, able grant same amounts loans, invest as much, have range profits but, time, technologically in reducing expenses use less assets. Moreover, least all types financial services providers included sample studied.
